Material science with the scanning electron microscope rests upon a lot of signals caused by the interaction of the electron beam with the specimen. Difference in electron energy, x-rays generated by the beam hitting the specimen and various other signals will give not only impressive imaging but also the composition of the material imaged. We use a NORAN SIX energy-dispersive system, for spectra and element mapping.
